The jewel in our crown is undoubtedly the original Storehouse at Ballyglunin Station, which has been fully restored as a regional arts centre providing a venue that can be hired for drama productions, art exhibitions, and music performances. The Storehouse has played host to many local and regional productions, including a rapturous rendition of Maurice Walsh’s The Quiet Man.

As a keen supporter of the arts and creative communities, we are delighted at Ballyglunin to welcome artists, writers and other creatives who require space to exhibit or a small studio to create their art. Education Tours

Ballyglunin Station offers students, researchers, schools, colleges, and universities a wealth of architectural, industrial, and social history to explore. Ballyglunin is a vibrant, immersive educational facility where history truly comes alive. Originally restored station and ancillary buildings give much insight to the past, while experts have noted Ballyglunin as an outstanding example of a late 19th century Irish train station.

The station is open all year round as an educational facility and resource. Self-guided tours are possible of the buildings on the site. However, school tours or other educational tours with a heritage expert can be arranged. We can adjust the content of the tour depending on your group and interests. Please get in touch with a member of our team through the contact form and we would be delighted to help you!

Heritage Tours

Ballyglunin Station can be explored on a self-guided tour or plan your visit in advance and enjoy a guided heritage tour with one of our experts. Your guide will give you unrivalled insight into the history of Ballyglunin and the significance of the station in local and national rail heritage. Feel the energy and excitement of early rail travel from this station and the role it played for many emigrants, a theme brought vividly to life in the film The Quiet Man. You will walk in the footsteps of John Wayne as he filmed those famous movie scenes at Ballyglunin (named ‘Castletown’ in the film). Along the way, admire the beauty of the original Station House, and find out more about the restoration journey. Walk along the track and learn more how rail transport worked in the 19th and early 20th century, with a visit to the restored Signal Cabin and Storehouse. There is signage, information boards and some memorabilia in place to facilitate an immersive experience in the rail history of Ballyglunin.

Tours can be tailored for your group and interests, including educational tours, heritage tours, school tours and group tours. An average visit of this type is 20-30 minutes, with the opportunity to ask your guide questions and receive recommendations for further exploring the history of the Ballyglunin area and Irish rail heritage.
